Pepe caused a storm of criticism after appearing to stamp deliberately on the hand of Lionel Messi during Madrid's 2-1 defeat by Barcelona in the Copa del Rey.
Manchester United striker Rooney wrote on Twitter: 'Pepe. What an idiot. Sometimes people wind u up.'
Injured Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere joined his England team-mate in the criticism, albeit more tamely, by writing: 'Poor from Pepe!'
Guti, who was vice-captain during his 15 years at the Madrid, also initially described Pepe's actions as incomprehensible, but didn't take kindly to Rooney's criticism.
He tweeted: 'I laugh at Rooney. There are many saints but in heaven. If you want to be a saint you must practise what you preach. To err is human.'
