Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney's spectacular overhead kick against Manchester City has been voted the greatest goal in the history of the English Premier League.

The England forward acrobatically volleyed home Nani's 77th-minute cross to take United eight points clear of City in the league standings en route to a record 19th English league title, and the award is the first in a series to commemorate 20 seasons of the Premier League.

Rooney said: "I grew up watching the Premier League so to be voted the best goal in the history of the Premier League is a great feeling.

"There's so many good goals in that shortlist, goals that I watched in my living room as a kid: Alan Shearer's goal, Paolo Di Canio's, Tony Yeboah's, David Beckham's. To be competing with them and winning is a great honor for me and something I'm very proud of. I'd like to say a big thank you to all the fans that voted for me."

Over 4.2million votes were cast by 300,000 supporters to decide the best goal, best save, best goal celebration and a fans' fantasy team. There are also six award categories being decided by a panel - best player, manager, team, season, most memorable quotes and a panel fantasy team.

The remaining award winners will be named over the next fortnight culminating in an event on May 15 where the best player and manager of the 20 seasons will be revealed.

The 20th Premier League season has featured some fantastic goals, with last night's swerving strike from Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse against Chelsea arguably the pick of the 2011-12 campaign so far, coming just days after Luis Suarez's long-range chip for Liverpool against Norwich.

Wayne Rooney branded Real Madrid bad boy Pepe an 'idiot' during El Clasico - and was immediately accused of hypocrisy by Bernabeu legend Guti.

Pepe caused a storm of criticism after appearing to stamp deliberately on the hand of Lionel Messi during Madrid's 2-1 defeat by Barcelona in the Copa del Rey.
Blast: Manchester United star Wayne Rooney condemned Pepe's foul on Twitter

Manchester United striker Rooney wrote on Twitter: 'Pepe. What an idiot. Sometimes people wind u up.'

Injured Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere joined his England team-mate in the criticism, albeit more tamely, by writing: 'Poor from Pepe!'

Guti, who was vice-captain during his 15 years at the Madrid, also initially described Pepe's actions as incomprehensible, but didn't take kindly to Rooney's criticism.

He tweeted: 'I laugh at Rooney. There are many saints but in heaven. If you want to be a saint you must practise what you preach. To err is human.'

The striker spent much of Chelsea's 1-0 win over Barcelona rolling around on the ground with a string of supposed injuries that miraculously cleared up straight away.

But despite Manchester United ace Rooney admiring the Ivorian's quality on the ball, the amateur dramatics on show also merited a mention.

He wrote: "Drogba. Your a good player but pls get up."

Rooney's Tweet was echoed by Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler, who wrote: "Has drogba got the right footwear on... Seems to be slipping a lot."

Ajax defender Gregory van der Wiel added: "Hahaha Drogba is so funny, all the time on the ground!"

Rooney Tweet

Drogba’s strike gives Chelsea an advantage going into Tuesday’s second-leg showdown at the Nou Camp.

Former Derby clogger Robbie Savage believes the striker's goal on the stroke of half-time proved he is better when he remains upright.

He said: "Drogba lol lol see what happens when you stay on your feet!"

But Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas had a theory about why the constant stoppages were taking place.

He chirped: "People on here killing off Drogba for diving around but I can guarantee the midfielders and defends are happy for the rest!"

Nike has been reprimanded by advertising regulators after it used the personal Twitter accounts of footballers Wayne Rooney and Jack Wilshire to promote its Make It Count campaign.

The sportswear giant is the first UK company to have a Twitter campaign banned by the ASA after tweets on the England pair's pages were ruled to be undeclared advertisements.

One tweet posted from Rooney's account stated: "My resolution — to start the year as a champion, and finish it as a champion...#makeitcount gonike.me/makeitcount".

Injured Arsenal midfielder Wilshire posted (to little avail): ""In 2012, I will come back for my club — and be ready for my country.#makeitcount.gonike.me/Makeitcount"

That's sort of chicanery is against the ASA's rules and the regulatory body said it was clear both tweets had been "agreed with the help of a member of the Nike marketing team."

Not misleading

Nike argued that both Premier League stars were well known for their association with the company and as such the tweets did not mislead either of the duo's followers.

However, the ASA's code says that advertisements must be "obviously identifiable" and ruled that these posts were not.

Earlier this year Rooney's Manchester United teammate Rio Ferdinand and model Katie Price were involved in a similar probe regarding tweets to promote Snickers chocolate bars.

These was ruled OK by the ASA as the tweets contained a #spon (sponsored) hashtag.
